Halloween Trick or Treat Safety

As parents:

* Know the neighborhood you are sending your kids out to, know their route if they are old enough to be on their own but mostly accompany them.

* Know the town or city curfew for trick or treating...date, times and set a curfew for your children.

* Protect yourself from a lawsuit by clearing the walk area of any trip, slip or fall hazards.  Light up the steps and keep any candle flames away from anywhere the children can accidentally catch costumes on fire.

* Put your vehicle in a garage or lock it up and don't leave any valuables visible. Leave outside lights on all night long to protect your home from possible vandals, hey tend to stay away from well light areas.

* If you are driving a vehicle please slow down and be on the look out for the kids crossing the streets even mid-block where you may not expect them.

* Help your child pick out a safe costume - fire proof or fire resistive, no blocked vision....warm enough if need be or something to keep them dry if raining.

* If the kids are going to a party check with the homeowner or organizer to see if moderated, who is attending, times, rules & set a pick up time.

* Kids will be kids....set some rules and explain the difference between having fun and vandalism.  Discuss animal cruelty issues to your older children also.

* Let your children know not to cut through any alleys, back yards or go to any dark homes and certainly don't let them go out alone trick or treating. Groups are more fun and much safer.

* Instruct the kids not to eat the candy until you inspect it. It is probably a good idea to inspect the candy you are handing out also.

* Instruct the kids not to go inside strangers homes or cars.

* Have the children carry a flashlight or glow stick and explain the rules of crossing the streets.

* A cell phone may be a nice option for the night also.

HAVE FUN BUT PLEASE BE SAFE FIRST !   Bob Moses - Moses Insurance 716-634-1212

TEEN DRIVING - 11 Facts

As an insurance agent I see many customers a day.  When my customer brings in a new teen driver we always sit them down to discuss a few very important issues.  I tell them that most of the teen driver accidents we report are caused by teens being distracted while driving.  Most end up rear ending the car in front of them that has stopped in traffic and the worst are from making a left turn onto another street and end up in a T-bone or head on accident ( these are both the worst for injuries ).  The driver lacks the experience and mis-judges how fast the on coming traffic is moving and turns right in front of the on coming car. PLEASE BE CAREFUL, SLOW DOWN AND PUT THE PHONE AWAY WHILE DRIVING. If even one teen thinks about this and we prevent one death I will feel a little better anyway.

11 Facts about Teen Driving:

 1) Car crashes are the leading cause of death for US teens ( 36% of all deaths in this age group )
 2) Roughly 35000 USA teens have died in car crashes in the past 5 yrs ( 6000 per year or 18 per day )
 3) TEXTING while driving makes you 4 times more likely to cause a crash.
 4) Almost 65% of teen passenger deaths occur when another teen was driving.
 5) Teens have the lowest SEAT BELT use of all drivers.
 6) Over 90% of teens admit to doing multi tasks while driving ( cell phone use, eating, playing loud music, interacting with friends....
 7) An overwhelming 75% of teens admit to TEXTING while driving.
 8) About 54% of teenage driver crash deaths occur on FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.
 9) The DEADLIEST MONTHS June, July & August then October.
10) July 4th and average of 28 teens die in car crashes every year.
11) January 1st an average of 23 teens die in car crashes every year.

PROTECTION

I was reading another insurance blog today and it triggered this blog.  DO YOU WANT CHEAP INSURANCE OR DO YOU WANT THE PROPER PROTECTION AND COVERAGE FOR THE DISASTERS THAT HAPPEN TO YOU ?   I think it is a no brainer ?  At the time of an auto accident that may be your fault and you get sued, I know you want to be covered.  If you do not have enough coverage you can say goodbye to your assets....savings, nice toys, homes ( liens ) , retirement income, garnished paychecks, future income and major worry that causes sicknesses.  The blog was discussing the on-line quoting of insurance whcih is fine. Do your research on line if you wish but PLEASE CONTACT A PROFESSIONAL INSURANCE AGENT to discuss the coverages, limits, needs you may have.  An independent agent represent many different insurance companies and will do the shopping for you so you get the proper coverages and you may also get the lowest prices.  BE CAREFUL FOLKS this is a very important part of your protection.  Home, Auto, RV's, Cycles, Off road motorized vehicles, small businesses in your home, secondary homes or rental properties, vacant land owned, disability income protection, life insurance to protect your families future or even long term care insurance. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR AGENT and ask questions.   Moses Insurance, Williamsville, NY.  716-908-4223
